In this highly informative, narrative style work of factual information, Isaac Alexis draws from his considerable experience in the medical field working with patients experiencing addiction and trauma, and provides real-world examples of the terrible effects that addiction can have on them. These include the tale of his cousin Susan, addicted to the titular Pink Crystal, leading her into a life of theft, unwanted pregnancies, and eventually her death.

Having read some of author Isaac Alexis’s other works recently, the same stark and emotively raw narrative is at play here, which is both highly shocking and highly effective in this type of cautionary tale. The narrative storytelling style of this type of non-fiction is highly effective because it draws us into the lives of the ‘characters’ of the piece, but then starkly reminds us that these are real people and that addiction is a devastatingly real part of so many people’s lives. This is quite an extensive collection of memories and advice, many of which I believe would be very useful when discussed in rehab and support groups for those looking to understand their own addictions and move away from their terrible repercussions. The story follows Susan as she battles her addiction to pink crystal. Getting addicted to the substance was easy, but sustaining it was taking a toll on her mind and body. She tries to get the maximum pink crystal from her own money, but when she can’t, she steals money from her relatives. But it has a bigger impact on her life than she thought. Her life spiraled out of her control and she is desperate for her next fix. Is there something that she can do to save herself? Does she even have the mental clarity to protect herself from the dangers of pink crystal? Does she even have a chance to survive at this point?

Written in a very professional yet refreshing manner, Susan’s story brings some very important facts about addictive substances to light. While we all know addictive substances are bad, reading about someone’s experiences makes it even more harrowing. The author, Isaac Alexis, ensures that Susan’s story is interesting enough to keep the reader engaged. Her story became personal for me. I was invested in her and I wanted to know how she was going to survive this ordeal. The narrative is smooth and the pace is perfect for the story.
